What You Should Know When You Don’t Feel Loved

What You Should Know When You Don't Feel Loved

BE

Do you ever have trouble taking a compliment? You’re not alone.  Sometimes it’s easier to believe the bad things about ourselves than it is to believe the good.  When it comes to love, it can be especially hard to believe that others can really love us for who we are and even harder at times like Valentine’s Day, when perhaps we are alone or just out of a relationship and have not yet found that person to share our life with.

I was once so broken that I couldn’t take a compliment because I didn’t believe I was worthy of them. I had been in a terrible one-sided relationship that left me feeling devastated and wondering if I would ever find someone to love me.

It was then that I remembered the greatest love story ever told and  realized I was a part of it.  Knowing that kept me going when I did not think I could carry on.  I share it with you today in my own words that you too might find comfort in knowing you are loved.

What You Should Know Whenever You Don't Feel Loved

The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

The world is a mess, but it didn’t start out that way.  Humans are tragically flawed but we did not start out that way either.  In the beginning, when God created the Heavens and the Earth, He saw that it was good.  If the world started out good, how did things get so bad?

Humans were created in the image of God.  In the same way a son or daughter bears the image of their parents, we were created to bear God’s image and to take care of the Earth and rule over it.

Part of being created in God’s image meant that we had the ability to reason and the free will to make choices.  God placed us in a garden and gave us free reign over everything with just one exception. We were not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or the consequence would be death.

How bad could having the knowledge of good and evil be? After all, it could make us more like God if we knew right from wrong the way He did.  We chose to rebel against God’s commandment and humanity fell.  We were cast out of the Garden, destined to live apart from God.  Sin entered the world and death came to all of us.

Since then we have been trying to find a way back to God. We try to work our way back to Him by doing more good things to offset the bad in hopes that the scales balance.  But there is only one problem, God is holy.  That means He is pure.  There is no darkness in Him and He cannot be where sin is.  We are separated from God because of our rebellion and no amount of good deeds can make us holy enough to bridge the gap between us.

The good news is God didn’t leave us to die.  He loved us enough to come after us.  To pursue us with the irresistible, unconditional love of a Father.  He made a plan to bring us back to Him.  He chose a people to communicate His plan through.  He sent them prophets to tell us in advance of His plan to save us.  Ultimately, God sent His own Son, Jesus, to execute His plan and to come for us.  Jesus said “I came to seek and to save that which was lost”.   He came to seek and to save us.  All of us.  The entire human race.

Since the punishment for the original sin was death, the only way to fix it and restore us to God was for a pure sacrifice that could make atonement.   Only someone spotless and holy would satisfy the judgement.  But there was none holy, no, not one.  So Jesus chose to die on our behalf.  When Jesus died on the cross, He took the punishment for our sin, the sin of all humanity for all of time and as He breathed his last, said “It is finished”.  Three days later, God rose Jesus up from the dead to show us He had conquered sin and death.

Jesus himself became the bridge that leads us back to God.   He said “I am the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father but by me... I am the resurrection and the life," He said, "if anyone believes in me, even though he dies, yet shall he live.”

This is the greatest love story ever told and you are a part of that story.  Throughout time, God has been relentless in his love for you and me and through Jesus, we have been restored to relationship with Him.  He has brought us from death to life, from darkness to light, from outcasts to sons and daughters of the living God.

Pay It Forward

What is your response to a love like this? Do you believe it? Do you believe God could love you this much? Or like taking a compliment, is it too hard to accept, feeling unworthy of it?  If the God of the Universe was willing to sacrifice His own Son to restore a relationship with you, you are worth much more than you think.

Even though compliments were hard for me to take all those years ago, it didn't mean that they were untrue.  Because I knew God loved me, I could believe that He had a plan for me and that plan was to prosper me and not to harm me.  It was to give me a future and a hope.

Believe He loves you today and choose to love Him back.  Choose to follow Him wherever He leads you.  And love those He puts in your path.  This is the entire duty of man, to love God and love our neighbor.

Summary

When you feel unloved, you should know that there is one who loves you.  There is one who pursues you.  There is one who gave all for you.  He will never reject you.  He will never stop loving you.  His name is Jesus.

Jesus loves you. Like a Father loves a newborn baby and wants to provide for it and protect it and cradle it and would give his life for it.  Jesus loves you.

On this Valentine’s Day, and every day, know that you are not forgotten.  You are not alone.  You are not unloved, unfollowed or un-liked. You are part of the greatest love story ever told and He who loves you loves you with a perfect love.

Happy Valentine's Day!

XO

  2. There is much truth in this! Satan, the Father of lies, loves when we are feeling sorry for ourselves and like we aren’t loved. However, God the Father, always loves us no matter what. For many years, I didn’t feel that I was worthy of God’s love and I worked so very hard to earn his love. While it’s true I’m not worthy of God’s love, he still freely gives it to me. Nothing that I can do will make me worthy. What freedom!
